RP200030

Description:
The Sega Visual Memory Unit (VMU) was a removeable flash storage device for the Sega Dreamcast console, used primarily for storing save games. Unlike memory cards for the other consoles of the era, the VMU also has a small LCD display and gamepad like buttons which expanded it's functionality beyond that of a flash memory device.

The VMU plugs directly into the Dreamcast's controller. Up to 2 units can be plugged in to a controller and up to 4 controllers can be plugged in to the Dreamcast, which meant up to 8 VMU's can be used at a time.

The VMU consists of 128K of flash memory, 100KB of which is available as user storage. The user storage is divided into 512byte blocks which equates to 200 blocks per VMU.

The LCD of the VMU inserted into the front port is viewable through a hole in the controller, but the buttons are only accessible with the VMU removed from the controller. The buttons are used to configure the VMU and use or play downloadable content and mini games. Many game titles included downloadable mini games which turns the VMU into a tiny hand-held games console. Games like "SegaGT" includes "Pocket GT" a top down racer. "Namco Museum" includes "Pac-it", a Pacman like game.

With the VMU inserted inside the controller, the LCD display is used to display useful game information in compatible titles. For example, in "Resident Evil: Code Veronica" the current health condition is displayed. Many game titles found many uses for the extra features of the VMU.

To protect the contacts at the top of the VMU when it was being used outside the controller it was supplied with a small removeable plastic cap.
