Description:
The Apple Mac Pro was the replacement for their PowerMac G5 PC's. Released toward the end of 2007, the Mac Pro 2,1 was an upgraded Mac Pro 1,1 with a new firmware and wider range of available processors. It still featured dual Intel Xeon server processors, DDR2 Memory, PCIe expansion bus and room for 4 SATA II hard disks, but now added the Xeon Quad-core Clovertown CPU's to the line-up. Processor speeds again ranged from 1.86GHz to 3.0GHz with memory configurations now from 1GB to 48GB (or 96GB with Snow Leopard). As multithreading with many Mac OSX applications gave almost linear performance the new 8-core machines were virtually twice as powerful. The main hardware was identical to the 1,1 model and 1,1's could be upgraded to 2,1 machines with just a firmware update which adds support for the new 4-core processors. The Mac Pro 8-core models started from £1749.

This exhibit has been severely upgraded with 32GB memory, extra hard disks, second optical drive and much faster graphics card.
